A well-lit driveway and front door are essential, but don’t neglect the other entry points of your home. While illuminating these two obvious areas makes would-be burglars less bold, they’ll often just go straight to another location where they can hide under the cover of darkness. For this reason, it is recommended that you light up every doorway to your home and garage, even the ones you don’t use that often. This makes entering the home less attractive to burglars, because their actions will be fully highlighted for people in the house, as well being more visible to passers-by.
Create an element of surprise with motion sensors
In addition to installing security lights at all entry points, make sure there are no dark corners of your garden for intruders to lurk in. This is especially true of the perimeter of your property where shrubbery and trees may provide them with a place to hide. Security lighting in this location is key, but having lights burning all night is costly and can be bothersome for your neighbours if it causes glare. This is where motion sensor fixtures come into play. They switch on when movement is detected, which can startle a criminal and deter them from going any further. It also serves as an alert for you that something or someone has set off the light. Motion sensor lights typically switch off again after a few minutes. We recommend placing them in hard-to-reach places, to ensure they can’t be tampered with.
Create the illusion of being home
A security lighting plan is not just for the exterior of your home. A strategically lit interior is far less inviting for intruders, as it signals to them that the house is occupied. However, it is not always possible to be home after dark and leaving lights on all the time uses a lot of electricity. It also may not be enough to fool a would-be intruder as criminals often scout a neighbourhood for several days before selecting a target, and if the lights are constantly on in a home, they’ll know it's just for show. For this reason, setting your lights to a timer will create the illusion of activity in the home. This technique can also be applied to the exterior of the home by using day/night bulbs.
