Also known as fairy lights, string lights are a type of fixture typically used as decor for both indoor and outdoor spaces. These lights were traditionally used over the Christmas period to create a festive ambience but are now acceptable to suspend year-round. And given their evolved functionality and versatility, it’s little surprise that they’ve become the go-to light source for adding a special touch. From cafe-style globes to twinkling mini LEDs, string lights come in a variety of sizes, colours and styles to suit almost every need.
String lights spruce up your patio or braai area
In South Africa, our mild climate means that we’re often fortunate enough to utilise our backyard or patio area all 12 months of the year. With that being said, it's often the summer holidays that prompt us to really spruce up these areas and what better way to do so than by incorporating string lights? These twinkling lights create a soft subtle glow to enhance any outdoor space while promoting relaxation.
String lights create a cosy ambience indoors
String lights inside the home are not just reserved for the Christmas tree. These lights can be used to generate a cosy ambience in spaces like the living room and bedroom. Their whimsical glow makes these rooms of rest feel inviting and comforting, especially on a cold winter's evening.
String lights set the mood for socialising and parties
From big events like weddings and birthday parties to intimate dinner gatherings and small family braais, string lights are used to add a special touch to otherwise ordinary areas. You won’t have to look far to find a local outdoor dining establishment or friend’s home adorned in string lighting. Whether draped among tree branches, wrapped around a pillar or zigzagged across a ceiling, the soft glow of string lights can transform any space into a party-ready zone or spot for family and friends to gather and unwind.
String lights are energy efficient
String lighting is energy-efficient in comparison to other functional light sources. They serve a decorative purpose so their light production uses far less wattage. LED designs, in particular, use up to 70% less electricity and last about ten times longer than the common incandescent bulb. There are also a number of solar options on the market that harness the energy of the sun to power up - a great energy-conscious option that is also convenient in times of load shedding.
